Welcome to the Anthill Group web-site. We are a grassroots group of individuals and organizations committed to helping Antigonish and its surrounding communities become more sustainable. To accomplish this vision, we realize we will need a great deal of people working together (Social Capital) to help us transition from an unsustainable way of living to a more sustainable way of living. "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." Margaret Meade What is Social Capital? Social capital is any value added to the activities and economic outputs of an organization or community by human relationships, partnerships and co-operation. For example networks, communication channels, families, non-government organizations, municipal government, businesses, trade unions, schools and voluntary organizations as well as social norms, values and trust. We are looking to bring together and strengthen the capacity of individuals and organizations committed to a more sustainable Antigonish.
Why is Social Capital Important to the People of Antigonish and the Surrounding Communities?
Individuals, organizations and communities rely on social relationships and interactions to achieve their objectives.
Internally: social capital takes the form of shared values, trust, communications and shared cultural norms which enable people to work cohesively and so enable the organization and community at large to operate effectively. This is essential when working towards and transitioning towards a sustainable community.
Externally: Social structures help create a climate of consent, or a licence to operate, in which trade and the wider functions of society are possible. Organizations and community leaders also rely on wider socio / political structures to create a stable society in which to operate: e.g. Government and public services, effective legal systems, trade unions and other organizations.
Ways an organization and communities can enhance social capital
• Provide safe, supportive living and working conditions, including family friendly policies.
• Source materials ethically and treat suppliers, customers and citizens fairly.
• Respect and comply with local, national and international law.
• Prompt and full payment of taxes and support of social infrastructure.
• Effective communication systems throughout the organization and community, reflecting shared values and objectives.
• Minimization of the negative social impacts of products and services [or maximization of the positive…]
• Support the development of the community in which the organization operates, including economic opportunities).
• Contribute to open, transparent, inclusive and fair governance systems.
