For more information visit specific pages, ie Outdoor Activities, or Educational Field Trips etc. NSOLD (Nova Scotia Outdoor Leadership Development Program) The Fresh Air Society runs provincial training modules in basic outdoor skills for families, outdoor enthusiasts and/or individuals taking their families or friends, acting as outdoor guides, or serving in a formal outdoor leadership position. These programs are lead by provincial instructions and sponsored in part by the Nova Scotia Office of Health Promotion and Protection. The NSOLD program is run in the Highland and Cape Breton region. For more information and an updated schedule go to: www.nsold.ca OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES We organize outdoor activities throughout the year for all ages. In the past, these have included ski weekends, snowshoeing and cross country skiing, family camping trips, bicycle tours, canoeing and kayaking, stargazing evenings, and many group hikes. FREE PLAY FOR YOUTH Free Play was developed to provide a consistent and integrated outdoor activities and eco-literacy program for youth aged 10-18 living in Antigonish and/or the surrounding communities. The framework of this program is based on a peer-engagement and mentoring model, in order to develop youth leadership and help foster healthy attitudes towards eco-literacy and physical activity outdoors in rural Nova Scotia. HARBOUR SKY ASTRONOMY CLUB The Harbour Sky Astronomical Club is the local astronomy club for the rural area in and around Antigonish Nova Scotia. We only have a small number of volunteers and limited resources, but we work hard to promote a greater appreciation and awareness of astronomy in our local area. The club is open to people of all ages and experience, our current members is comprised of individuals from all walks of life who share an interest in astronomy and space science. PADDLE ANTIGONISH Would you like to learn how to paddle a canoe and explore the Antigonish Harbour around the Antigonish Sail & Paddle Club? All required equipment will be provided, however participants can bring their own. You can decide if you want to paddle recreationally or seek a few instructional tips; but no certifications will be given. If you are uncertain of your skill, you can be partnered with an experienced paddler to help you with the basics until you are comfortable. Cost is "free" and we will meet weekly weather permitting, Thurs 6-9 p.m. at the Antigonish Sail and Paddle Club - Seabright Yacht club. If you need equipment or would like to work on your canoeing skills email Andrew Foran aforan@stfx.ca or call 863-2963 to reserve your spot - 12 maximum. If a "regular group" emerges and we wish to we can move to other locations and explore other wonderful water trails with the County of Antigonish and the Highland Region. EDUCATIONAL FIELD TRIPS & GUEST SPEAKERS We organize educational tours to highlight sustainability "success stories" in our community, including tours of organic farms and home gardens, "off the grid" power installations, wind power farms, and water and waste management facilities. Our meetings feature guest speakers, films, and presentations on topics to help individuals, families and businesses develop environmentally sustainable practices. Past topics have included alternative energy, energy efficiency, organic food, non-toxic cleaning, and waste education. RESOURCE LIBRARY We have a growing library of books, films and magazines on topics concerning the environment and sustainability available for loan, directly through our partnership at the Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library in Antigonish. Link to the Greenroom COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT We work in partnership with local media, governments, community groups and organizations to promote environmentally sustainable practices and lifestyles.
